Position Space

In physics, there are two complimentary ways of representing the world: position space and momentum space. Position space, as its name implies, deals in discrete locations. You go from position space to momentum space (and back) via a Fourier transform. Momentum space is particularly good for discussing global variations or patterns in the distribution of energy and matter. Position space is good for discussing specific, localized phenomena.

The name of this blog reflects my intention of writing about tangible, specific ideas - clear positions - instead of fuzzy abstractions. But it also implicitly suggests that such things are innately coupled to large scale patterns and trends (via a metaphorical Fourier transform) and that a well-chosen set can indeed get us quite far in the world of theory.
